http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/6457499/Patch_103_Now_Available-6_19_2012This is an updated review post 1.0.3 patch and speaks in terms of being level 60 and playing on Inferno.
The Good
+ iLevel 61-63 gears drops more frequently
+ Crafting and upgrading is significantly cheaper
+ Monsters on Inferno deal less damage
The Bad
- All changes are tailored around the Real Money Auction House
- Increased repair costs
- Inflated economy
- Breaking barrels / pots not worth the time
- Lots of nerfs
- Rage timers
Overview
The 1.0.3 patch addressed a few things such as item drops and also had some focus on making things harder for botters to farm. This essentially has made the game less appealing, thus less fun. Pretty much all the changes are focused around people selling things in the RMAH (Real Money Auction House). Do you like running a particular act over and over, farming certain locations, or treasure goblins? Nerfed. In a tweet response, Game Directory, Jay Wilson noted that D3 is not a Single Player game.
Items
iLevel 60-63 drop rates have been modified and should drop more frequently depending on which act you play on. However, items will no longer drop from breaking destructible items, and the chance to get an item from a weapon rack has been decreased.
Repairs have been
drastically changed (for the worse). All of my gear is iLevel 60+ and costs have gone from 4k to about 38k, for a full repair (all gear at 0/x durability). I spend more money on repairing than anything else. Doing a Butcher run usually nets me about 100k. The gold gain isn't proportional to the repair costs.
Crafting
Costs have been reduced significantly for both the Jeweller and Blacksmith and levelling them up to 10 is rather trivial. Don't expect to be able to use any of the gear you can craft though, as you're still better off buying from the AH. The Jeweller only has reductions up to Flawless Square, everything upwards of that is still rather expensive.
Difficulty
As mentioned before about repair costs, Act I should be relatively trouble free assuming you're geared up decently (each piece in the 100k each range; AH price). Act II is a different story; people have speculated that you need half your gear to be about in the 1mil range. If you're not geared up properly expect to die, often. Normal mobs can take you down fairly easy and if you run into a mob of specials? Well, good luck to you!
Summary
Until Blizzard stops focusing on the RMAH and start focusing more on players enjoyability of the game I think D3 has a very short life span and has no factors that will keep players attached to the game. We all know why Diablo 2 did so well and why people are still playing it to this day.
Unfortunately, the chance of Blizzard changing their focus is 0% This will be proven more when;
- Gold goes up for sale on the RMAH
- PVP is released and people start to need PVP gear
- Expansion comes out with new Items
As someone who's been playing since Beta and seeing all the changes that the game has gone through and the focus they're based around. If you have not bought D3 yet, I strongly recommend you do not buy the game. As for myself, once Guild Wars 2 releases I will be shelving D3 away for quite a long time. I've been playing Diablo since the first game and to see the state that Blizzard have gone with D3, I'm very disappointed and let down.
