The Miley Scandal

So there's been this HUGE shit storm going on for Miley Cyrus lately regarding a photo that was taken with a few friends where they pull back their eyes in jest presumably of Asians. Well no, "Pacific Islanders" I guess is what is preferred these days. Which is slightly odd to me. The Pacific Islanders hail from Asia.......but they don't like being called Asians? Are Europeans (who are from EUROPE....go figure) going to start wanting to be called "Atlantic continentals"? Or Spaniards, or Americans, or Germans......I dunno, where does it stop?

I just don't understand why people get so damn offensive about a name, that is only meant to signify your region of origin? Maybe the people from Japan don't want to be associated with China peoples? I dunno, because I'm totally lost as to what name I'm allowed to use for what people.....and it frickin' changes depending on who you're talking to!! It's a tad bit frustrating.

Anyways, I digress. This whole Miley photo scandal has just EXPLODED beyond offensiveness, and has crossed over into the insane. There is now a group in Los Angeles who is suing Miley for 4 billion dollars. Did you catch that, 4 BILLION dollars!!!! What in the *bleep*?!! They are claiming they are going to give $4000 to each "Pacific Islander" in the LA area for damages. If I was a "Pacific Islander" I would be more offended by the lawsuit than the pic.

Margaret Cho, who pretty much makes a living being rude, disgusting, and completely offensive towards her race has now taken up arms against Miley as well. Might as well right? I mean it's ok for Cho to make fun of who she calls 'Asians'.....but god forbid someone else has fun with ya!!

It's perfectly ok for people to make fun of red neck hill billie white inbred *bleep*ers from Texas. Shit, you could take pics of that ALL day long, and no one would bat an eye. But you better be ready for a 4 billion dollar lawsuit if you go out and offend anyone else if you're white.....or am I *bleep*in' "Caucasian" now??? Oops, I think I just offended myself by calling me white.

The truth is Miley is a dip shit. I get that. But so is Cho. So is George Lopez who slams the living shit out of whites in his show (that's ok though....he's Mexican so it's ok. Or is he Latino???). And so is this group going after a kid for 4 billion dollars.

I like Carlos Mencia.....at least he dishes it out to EVERYONE!! What's that joke...."I'm not racist, I hate everyone." Seriously, that's him. And if you can take a damn joke, check him out.

In no way do I defend her actions, but I sure as hell wouldn't care if a group of "Pacific Islander" KIDS (yeah we are talking about children here people) were to pull their eyes to make fun of white people (round eyes as they used to say) I sure as hell wouldn't give two shits, let alone have my hand out for my share of 4 billion from it.

Well if nothing else, it has given Miley a little bit more time in the spotlight, Cho a little bit more rope before her career finally flushes down the toilet, and the group filing the lawsuit a cause. Because we don't have more important things to discuss at all, like how California has decided they can't give anyone tax refunds this year. Yeah that one doesn't hit the news does it????

I would really love to see some CIVIL banter on this topic if you guys/gals are up for it.

*disclaimer* Please feel free to make fun of me (Mr. Whitey) if it makes you feel better. Cracker, Honkey, inbred, hill billie most likely all apply however If you call me a "zonie" or "Arizonian" then you're in for a world of hurt. I prefer "Western Desertonian". Thank you.

The person who started the lawsuit against Miley is a douche. She's[lawsuit starter] just perpetuating the stereotype and isn't doing anyone any favors.

Yeah I would like to see the same group go after that Cho broad. That lady does way more damage in that area than Miley.

It's a pipe dream dude. At this point I would settle for some racial tolerance.

FYI: Pacific Islander =/= Eastern Asian =/= Southeast Asian

Slippery slope. I am not a fan of Miley Cyrus, so screw her and her untalented ass. The lawsuit is pretty excessive, but I'm not mourning for her or anything. Boo hoo, poor little rich girl.

Also, it's considered distasteful for "white people" to make fun of "ethnic groups" because the West has been the greater power in recent history, running around the world like they own the place, kidnapping Africans, bunch of other terrible stuff. Heh, people have committed atrocities against their own race for a while, but there's some odd unspoken rule somewhere saying that someone of ANOTHER color can't make fun of someone of a differing skin tone. I guess a lot of it stems from the supposed racial frustration of being suppressed by whitey. There's a lot of theories anyway.

    Bleh.

Jokes are jokes, but you never know if the person in question is being serious. Racism sucks, and I hate being on the receiving end. No, I don't mean some dumb broad pulling at her eyelids (hope she falls down some stairs -- famous people should set better examples for their impressionable followers)... I mean REAL racism, like when someone glares at you for no damn reason on the street or a business establishment treats you like shit even when your money is as good as the next person's.. and generally being kicked around because people think that they can get away with it. You don't even want to know some of the shit people have said or done to me because of my skin. So if anyone tells me America is over racism, I'm going to club them in the face with my 360 controller AFTER they kiss my ass.

And no, I will not get over it.

Yeah I agree. Miley is an idiot for sure. I also agree that America is still racist. AMERICA. There are plenty of places white people can't go without being subject to racism as well. Compton, China Town, Chula Vista......racism goes all ways as far as my experiences. I was born and raised in San Diego.....even spent a few years up in the Irvine area. As diverse as California is, there is still a LOT of learning to be had about racism and stereotypes.

It's not like White people were the ONLY people enslaving mofos either, but for some reason that era takes precedence in the history books. There are still mass genocides happening in Africa between black tribes. In reality white people screwed some shit up. I get that, but that wasn't ME.....and I can't apologize forever for something someone else did.

Anyway, I guess my whole beef is that if we're going to start slapping down lawsuits for 4 billion dollars for Miley making inappropriate gestures, then we need to do it to EVERYONE who makes fun of other races......because right now it seems pretty racist that we're going after some lame ass white girl rather than George Lopez, or many of the black comedians slammin' races as well.

To tell you the truth I don't like that idea either. I like the fact we can make fun of each other and have a great laugh doing it. I love the fact that a black man feels comfortable enough to get on stage and make fun of stereotypes that fit me......they wouldn't be stereotypes if there wasn't a little bit of truth in them after all.

Anyways, only suppression I do is between me and my wife And she ain't against it at ALL!!! LMAO

Why can't teenagers just be teenagers anymore. That sort of shit is just a bit of fun. Especially when the friend is taking part. Utter bullshit to give the girl crap for it.

That is unless all the rubbish is started by her 'people' for publicity. In which case she should be flayed, strung and quartered.

... because if we excused rude or insensitive behavior by saying things like, "Let teenagers be teenagers," or "Boys will be boys," we'd be up to our eyeballs in oblivious little twats who will eventually grow up to become equally oblivious adults with no sense of decency.

The lawsuit is completely unnecessary. But I still don't think she was right. Another issue is her fame, the fact that is an idol many young kids admire. She should be a little more responsible than that, considering such.

You realise she was having a laugh with a friend. It's in no way related to any other people. The only reason people even no about it is because the media decide to make a story out of nothing and make some dosh.

The media making a story out of the potentially insensitive shenanigans of a celebrity idol. Totally did not expect that. Sucks that she's ROLLING IN DOUGH, but that fame comes at a price -- nothing she does is private.

It's not related to other people in that she clearly wasn't making fun of Asian people which is what the huge deal is being made about. It just shits me when the media make a story out of nothing like that. Anyone with brains can see that it was childish fun and in no way insulting anyone. Problem is most of the people that read about this shit believe it and it's needlessly hurting someones reputation. Not that I care about her at all. Just the principle of the thing.

But I do think it is silly to think that her actions or anyone else's can be viewed as being "in no way related to other people." Everything we do has some effect, and though I don't think her intentions were malicious (we all throw around racist jokes in the company of friends), I can't agree that it has nothing to do with anyone else. That just comes down to a lack of education and our eagerness cover old wounds without healing them. Example here is that the "pulling eyes back" joke references old days of yellow-face... which are pretty insulting to be honest, because people were just uneducated in the aspects of race, ethnic sensitivity, etc... people still thought blacks and Asians were biologically inferior. She or you may not find it malicious, but to others, it can feel hurtful.

Education.. lack there of. We're too busy being afraid of racism and offensive shit that we don't bother trying to address the issue. People say it's over, get over it, but that's just a shallow response to a problem that we're nowhere near resolving. We can get closer to understanding it with education, but people dismiss these things as outdated... like, "Oh, stop crying, we're all equal now."

No, we're not. We never will be if we keep up this avoidance mentality. Miley Cyrus was wrong, but so are the "advocates" suing/attacking her for it. After this fiasco is over, we won't be better off.

Same goes with sexuality, but thaaaaat's a story for another day.

Well I can see where you are coming from and I can also tell that you are clearly upset by the whole thing. Apologies if I've offended you by being short, it was unintentional if I did. We both agree though that it's stupid how such a big deal is being made about it which is all I was really getting at in the end anyway.

I learned most of my racial......ummm 'tolerance' in the military. That sounds horrible, but I don't have a better word to describe it. There is really no room for racial intolerance when thrown into a barracks with guys from all over the country with a multitude of different ethnic backgrounds and beliefs.

I have a pic of a friend of mine who happened to be black. He's holding his fingers up to another friend of mine's head in a gun gesture, who is of course white. I'm certain that if anyone stole my pic and published it, someone would scream that I was depicting "African Americans" as violent towards whites. The reality is, we were all just having a good time. Not a single one of us looked at it as a racial issue, and the thought wouldn't have crossed our minds to look at each other in such a context.

I think we (as a society) need to stop trying to dig up dirt on famous people to begin with. Obviously, private personal pics are meant to be kept as such anyway. Chances are every one of us has a pic that could be taken in a negative way and we would be embarrassed to see released to the public.

If Miley had posted it in a blog, or took out full page ads depicting this shit, then I would say she needs to take full responsibility for her actions......but a private pic taken with friends and meant to be kept private, well I think we all need to be a bit more tolerable when it comes down to that aspect.

There was no malicious intent, and hopefully she really did learn a lesson to be more respectful of others. Other than that, that trumped up lawsuit needs to be dropped and she needs to fade into oblivion like we all really want her to do anyway.
