Nintendo DSi Mini-review

So, the new Nintendo DS refresh is out in North America after launching in Japan and Europe. The new features of the DSi intrigued me enough that I decided to see if I could snag one of my own. As it turns out, unlike the Wii, the DSi wasn't very difficult to get at retail at all. I even managed to get the color I wanted, black. The blue looked a little too neon for my tastes, despite being a North American exclusive. To be sure, I believe the blue color was not random; it strongly resembles the blue previously used on the Wii box and in the Wii menus.

No, I didn't get no lovely cakes or gift boxes. I had to get mine from the stores, like the peasant I am!

Upon firing up the DSi, you'll be asked the usual system setup options. Additionally, you have the choice to take a snapshot you can use as a wallpaper for the top screen of the DSi when in the system menu. Here's what photos from the DSi look like when transferred to SD card for use everywhere:

Barely cellphone camera quality, as you can see. More for silliness, I suppose. And what silliness you can have; when going into the Camera menu, you're also invited to try the photo tutorial where you can take a picture of your magnificent self and play around with it using several customization options.

I stuck with Graffiti, as I could use it to hide my hideous face further enhance my GORGEOUS features as you can see:

Played around with the audio, and initially couldn't figure out how to get the darn thing to play music files off of SD card despite them being in AAC format. Did some research and discerned that .m4a files created by iTunes worked, and having purchased something off of iTunes a little while ago, I decided to give it a shot and transfer it onto the SD card. Loaded it up on the DSi music player, and it worked! I'll need to do some more research into this. In the meantime, it appears iTunes will be your friend for DSi music playback; just get the program to convert your desired tracks into AAC format, and copy them over to your SD card.

Nice little visualization I chose. :)

Downloaded the DSi browser after linking my Club Nintendo account to my DSi account. Neoseeker certainly looked... interesting through the DSi. Actually it didn't look too bad at all! Takes a little work to browse, but you can swap the screens to choose between navigating a smaller or larger portion of the webpages. Seems to run out of cache really fast though.

Of course, I played some games too. :P So far I haven't noticed a marked improvement, though the color reproduction might actually be better. Audio is also a little clear, so hey, maybe things will work out gameplay-wise!

That's it for now. I dig the cut of the DSi's vibe, but maybe I'm just a damned N-tard after all.

It shall be engraved upon your soul, Tsukasa!!!

Damn, I'm totally jealous you have Valkyrie Profile!! Mr. Lucky!! The DSi doesn't look as cheaply made as the DS in the pictures. that was one thing I have always disliked about the DS itself is just the fact the buttons felt crude and cheap. Of course that's how Nintendo keeps the cost down. I like the look of the DSi, but surely can't justify the expense at this time as it would be a pure luxury purchase.

I kinda like the construction quality of my DS. I consider it a pretty sturdy piece of hardware for the price. No plans on upgrading though.

^ I don't think I've heard anything like that before (as far the they 'cheaply made' comments. Hahaha. ;p

I love my DS Lite, but even then I'm slightly tempted to sell it and try to get a DSi. I most likely won't, but the temptation is there. I blame the commercials that Nintendo keeps showing.

And Covenant of the Plume = <3

      >kik36: Yeah, the DSi is actually still a very nice piece of kit, but you're absolutely right; for most gamers with a DS, it's a luxury they don't really need at the moment. At least until the DSi exclusive stuff comes out, and only then if they're actually interested in them.

      >Klope62: Covenant of the Plume is indeed the stuff of goodness, and a real return to form for the franchise in terms of characters, setting and background. The gameplay is very nice too! So far I've gotten the B ending (after using the Plume during the last few battles on the A route, go figure), and I'm currently on the C route. I'm saving the A route for last, after I actually complete the B route in its entirety; so that means actually getting Lieslotte, Valmur and Phiona!

This is my first time playing the franchise, actually. ;o

Haha..I started on Path A and stayed up until I got Fauxnel, thought he was a douche, and used the Plume on him. ;p, haha..besides that, I played the game mostly unaware of the paths, but I believe I made my way unto Path B and got that ending. On my play through now, I think it automatically put me on Camille, but I haven't made a move yet. I think I may go for Path C.

Nice figurines, Wolfwood. It's just a shame that the DSi seems not to read GBA games. I'll stick with my DS .

The black color looks good though.

Ha ha, I got over the course of a few months (they weren't all released at once, incidentally). One very potentially bad thing about the matte black color is that it might show any scratches on the surface easier under direct sunlight; it shows dust easier anyways! :\

Yeah, I know about dust, my PC tower is black, my keyboard is black and my speakers for it are black also. So, I see always dust around me.

It's official: you are Nintendo's whore. But I still <3 you anyway.

Also, my figurines can beat yours up.

Your figurines probably need to lay off the steroids! Actually I spend most of my gaming time on the DS these days, so I probably got drawn into the hype quicker than most level-headed folks.

Excellent review, man. You should post a picture of what Neo looks like on it.

Still debating on whether or not to get one of these myself, partly because I bought a camera on impulse recently (it was reallly cheap)..and I don't really feel like converting 75gb+ of music to AAC. Plus, lower battery life..

Have to say I'm jealous, though.
Eh, I'll probably get one when I have the money to blow. In the meantime I'll keep on with my trusty DS Lite and put my money towards a guitar and such things.

Also your face is far from hideous. Be nice.

I have a DS, but I rarely use it. I go through phases on playing it night and day and then not at all. It has some interesting features the DSi, but its pure exploitation, I guess we can just be slaves to the rhythm sometimes. Nice review though
