New & Improved vs. return of a Classic

Wow, its been so long since I have posted a blog that I feel like I should be making a confessional or something. Not gonna though, have too many people out there just dying to suggest possible penances.

The title might be a little confusing since I wasn't thinking product advertising. It comes from a quandry I have been in. Some years ago I was drafted to join a role play here on Neo. As role plays go, this one was floundering a bit. Basically it was a dating RP going nowhere. I wasn't brought in so much to heroically rescue it as much as provide a diversion and hopefully inspire folks to change gears as it were with what they were posting. In the end the RP pulled a 180 from directionless to something special, at least in my eyes along with the eyes of a few other fans. It is still in the RP archives, just look for Really Dark Shadows.

So what does all this have to do with my blog's title? Don't worry, I am getting to that, but I thought it would help to have a little history to help explain it all. My favorite character in that RP was actually the secondary character I brought in, Kelly. I love this character, she didn't originate with the RP though, she predates it by a good number of years. She is in effect my template character for just about every book RPG I have ever been shanghaied into. Yep, that makes me a geek, but what can I say, I have had a lot of fun with it over the years... and it kept me out of trouble. Of course the trouble I stayed out of myself, Kelly found plenty of. She is irreverent, bold, brash, mouthy, pain in the kiester with a unique combination of survival instincts and suicidal tendancies propelling her along.

Now for the quandry. I have been having story ideas dealing with Kelly rattling inside my skull wanting to get out. That's the easy part of writing. The tough part is actually sitting down and getting those ideas out of your brain and onto paper (in whatever written form it may end up in) in a way that is coherent and still true to the vision inside your mind. The core that is Kelly has been unchanged from the beginning. Changing that is out of the question. Her history, on the other hand, has gone through many changes as I have her interact in different worlds with characters from all kinds of personalities. So which history do I keep? Or do I start fresh? That is the question that has prompted my title.

The next question is in what form to bring Kelly back in? I know a few folks would love to see the return of Really Dark Shadows, but honestly I am not sure I'd be able to recapture the feeling & tone in that same way again. I'm thinking of possibly starting with a few rough draft short story / chapters in the Writer's Lounge and see where it goes from there. Like the original dating RP, perhaps I can shift it into something more worthwhile for folks to enjoy.

Hmm.... wonder if I can get Keiichi to send me a scan of that picture of Kelly I sent him once?

I should probably see this stuff first, but I like writing with fresh inspiration from something recent in life which touched me in some way. Sometimes continuing somethings gets a bit boring for me, or I find it hard as my mindset has changed and so has my writing so that it's not easy to pick up and continue anymore.

Jen drew a picture? I want to see!

I used to write short stories too back in the day; it's a lot of fun. I think you should bring back the character of Kelly as though it were you looking through her eyes. =P Would be interesting to see what goes on in your mind half of the time. XD

I do have a couple of pictures of Kelly that I drew, but the one I sent Keiichi was a copy of one done by a friend of mine. I think he did a much better job of it.

Kelly is very much a creature of impulse. I don't think she even knows what is going through her mind half the time. She does tend to have a running commentary with the entity in her sword though that should give people a fair idea of her personality rather quickly.

The following is a very rough draft of a possible opening scene. I know where I want to go with it, but I'm running into difficulties actually getting there. =/

"Where the hell am I?" Kelly looked around, vaguely aware that she had been wandering around lost in her own inner world probably for some time by the look of things.

*Not Hell, you'd recogonize Hell. I must say it took you long enough to snap back into awareness.* The light baritone voice in her head was mocking, but there was an underlying edge of irritation to it.

"You gated me didn't you? This isn't Nijade City" She took in her surroundings with growing interest while she waited for Pathfinder to explain just what he had cooked up for her this time. Weathered, but well maintained, brownstone buildings of understated elegance lined an intersection that looked like it should have been cobblestone. It would have been far more in keeping. Actually the paving looked recent. At a guess someone in authority had decided that in this comfort was more important than appearance. Cobblestone might look nice but it tended to wreck havoc on vehicles and their passengers. Oh the old time feel wasn't all gone, just up-dated a little. Intricate wrought iron railings were more decorative than protective. Mature decidious trees spaced out neatly, and maintained just so, along each broad sidewalk that was startling clear of debris. A light breeze carried with it the scent of the ocean, one with far less pollutants then one might expect in a thriving town. Evidently this was a place that kept its industry in check.

She glanced up at the signposts, Moonrise Ave & Winchester Blv. She blinked. "Great, I'm at the corner of New Wave and Tradition. Just why am I here Path?"

*Take a good look at yourself* Deciding to humor him, Kelly rolled her eyes and used the reflective quality of the Coffee Shoppe window next to her as a mirror. She expected to see her usual self: too short, still too thin, mass of black hair, funky colored eyes like yellow topaz, in streetkid clothes that luckily never seemed to go out of fashion. Memory smacked her in the face as she stared at clothes that weren't just well worn but covered in soot & ash complete with a few new tears and even signs of bloodshed. Her hair wasn't just its usual unruly mass, it was a tangled mess and bore the same coating of soot & ash. As did every visible bit of skin. Bruises she hadn't been aware of until now suddenly started to hurt.

Well, that explained the odd looks she had been getting from passersby.

*Considering your condition, and keeping in mind the sheer number of ~friends~ you have made in Nijade, I decided that getting you out of there was critical for your continued health. We are here so that you might find an abode not likely to be firebombed this time.*

"My work is in Nijade. It is not like I can just pick up and flitter off. The council would object, and they never do that nicely."

*I can get you back to Nijade at anytime, but honestly you need a place where you can safely recoup or you won't last out the year.*

"Ok, I'll ask again. Where are we?" She sounded more resigned than irritated. There was no sense wasting energy in an argument she knew she wasn't going to win. Especially in view of the scenes her memory insisted on replaying for her of the past 36 hours. It hadn't been a great place to live, but she'd been in far worse and she had just started to get comfortable there... which might have been part of the problem. She had gotten too comfortable and apparently a bit sloppy in her habits for continued survival.

*Town is called Port Agustine. I chose it because while the supernatural isn't exactly commonplace, most of the local populace is just enough aware of it not to over-react when it occurs.*

    "You switched realms on me?!?"

*Considering the reach some of your ~friends~ have I decided it would be wise.*

She stuck her tongue out at him. Or rather she stuck her tongue out at her reflection. It might have been a childish reaction, but it did sum up her feelings on the matter. Then she sighed, "So was it a complete loss?"

*Not entirely. Slim managed to mask our departure, so it is possible that they believe they were successful. Although I wouldn't bank on it, there is sure to be someone that either knows or believes that you got out of there.*

Kelly snorted, and then sneezed as she accidently inhaled some of the ash. "Caldone at the very least won't believe I'm dead until he personally stakes me out and dismembers me. Even then he is likely to do unpleasant things with the rest just to be sure."

*Slim is salvaging what he can, but most of it is easy enough to replace.* There was a pause and then with some aspirity, *Might I suggest that you at least start looking for a place where you can get cleaned up and rested that isn't quite so public? You are starting to attract attention.*

Kelly grumbled under her breath but started down the street, "I thought you said this place was used to some weirdness."

*It is, but there is weird and then there is you. Weird is easier to comprehend.*

Like I said last night, you have quite the creative mind for this.
