Red Ring of Death Strikes Red

The RRoD is sort of one of those things you read about all the time, but if you haven't experienced it you feel like its almost a myth, or curse, that has hopefully passed you by. That's how I've always felt anyway. Then suddenly I fell victim to the sinister beast.

Thankfully Microsoft did the right thing with extending existing owners to a 3 year warranty against the RRoD. I called 1-800-4-MY-XBOX (this number works in both Canada and US) on a Friday night at 7:30pm PST and got through within 2-3 minutes to a tech support agent. Now that's impressive.

He walked me through a few steps, and we confirmed a RRoD General Hardware Failure. He then offered to either ship me a box (~5 business days) or send me a fully paid electronic waybill to ship the X360 back absolultely free. I chose to go with the waybill since we have plenty of boxes here.

I was told the turnaround is about 2-3 weeks. I was concerned about the horror stories of bad repairs or refurbished units that die soon after being sent as RRoD replacements, so I talked to the fellow some more. He told me that apparently in Canada if you get the RRoD they take your 360 back and give you a brand new unit with a new manufacture date, which presumably means I get a Jasper system, with the redesigned cooler, 65nm CPU/GPU and 150W PSU (vs 175W PSU). This is highly exciting to me also since I think it means I'll have HDMI out (currently I don't).

How it all happened

I don't play my Xbox alot. Probably around 3-5hrs a week depending on time, but as much as 10-15hrs when I'm really into a game. I've had my box for around 2years, but when I played GOW1 I had a few overheating related lockups. Lately in the past 2 months I've had maybe 3-4 lockups accompanied by video artifacts. Tonight I got one, and right afterwards the famous ring.

Good Experience So Far

Well anyway, RRoD sucks, but the customer service was fast, patient/courteous, and it looks to be effective. I'll keep my fingers crossed. So far this is one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had.

Haha, I would've been praying for a RRoD in that case!

Good to know not all the customer service experiences aren't bad..hopefully they're always aiming to improve it, something I think pretty well any decent company should be after.

I think I've been lucky. I got my 360 on release and never had that problem. Sometimes I freeze in games but it's not very often. I wouldn't be covered by any warranty now either, so hopefully I stay lucky.

I was very impressed by their customer service, too. Getting through on the phone wasn't a problem, and everything was sorted relatively quickly. I had my xbox back in less than two weeks after I made the phone call.

GOW = God of War, of course? I hope you're not playing that 'gears' game that seems to have stolen the acronym given to such a great game.

Hm, I've had mine for about 2 years and I had to send it in once because of the disc drive error (another common problem listed on their site). I had them send me a box, which came with packing materials a detailed instruction sheet on how to pack your 360 securely.

Xbox 360 service is generally pretty good. I had to send it in with my decals since removing them would've ruined the skin anyway. I wrote a note asking them to please be careful with the decals because I like them very much and could not remove them without screw 'em up anyway.

Came back without a scratch.

Glad yours didn't turn into one of those horror stories we all read about.

Well hopefully the service folks didn't think you were being cheeky with them by being particular with the decals, most of us would've just wanted a working console back! Perhaps that was your test!

My Xbox 360's A/V port decided to stop working a couple of days before Grand Theft Auto IV was released. I purchased an Xbox 360 Arcade model to replace it, but still haven't managed to return the first one to Microsoft. Apparently unless it "red rings" I'll have to pay $100 in repair charges. Ah!

I also got the RRoD not long ago, but luckily enough I paid an extra £20 to buy an in-store warranty. So I just took it back to the shop and it was replaced straight away.

Wow, seems like awesome customer service. Though I don't own an Xbox myself, I know that the RRoD sucks.

Good luck on getting back a fully usable Xbox Red! (Y)

An update to this situation: I got an email yesterday (Jan 6th) telling me my X360 was received by the service dept. I shipped my package on Dec 16th, which arrived on Dec 22nd (according to UPS tracking). So between Dec 22nd and Jan 6th the X360 was never entered into Microsoft's system as being received.

I guess they were just all on vacation

Red this is exactly why I've been trying to convince you to join the forces of light, i.e. Playstation... I'm sure you'll be able to use that universal controller of yours to control it

How about if you buy a PS3 I shall do 100 unique page edits (adding proper content) a day for a week on the wiki's...

Playstation is really marking high, but you know xbox have some edge like any game out in the market it also comes in xbox, and while ps2 games cant be played on ps3. One thing that xbox lacks is this RROD Enigma. This really is a pain in the ass for gamers. I suffered a blow when I saw these lights of death and after researching days over the net I found this helpful article to fix the red rings of deaths aka RROD problem

Happened to one of my friend's, they refused to replace it so he found a friend that could actually do something about it.
