Why have a *bleep*ing Mic on the DS in the first place?

Did they really need to put a Mic on the Nintendo DS Lite? Does it really have any potential besides an almost pointless add on?

Yeah, rant blog. Alright, basiclally I was playing Pokemon Platinum earlier and started messing about in the underground. I happen to step on fire trap, which, for the record, sets your player on fire, and as he stand there without a care in the world, you have to blow it out via the mic.

Grr I spent so long trying to blow into that mic to put it out, but nothing was happening. I was almost kissing the mic seemingly at one point just to get it to work. And you know what? I didn't even get out in the end, had to soft reset. :(

So yeah, I don't need to see why we've gotta look like idiots via the mic.

All in favour!

      Aye!
      *raises hand*

      I don't have a DSi, I have the original DS. :3
It's really old, and the touch screen is beginning to fail.

Voice chat is a good reason, but I believe it's only available in Metroid Prime Hunters and Pokémon Diamond/Pearl.

My mic works fine, you may have been blowing at the wrong angle. It's just a bit of fun, no different to providing two screens with one having touch abilities, it's just to add to a game. As mentioned, it's also good for voice chat. I like it in other games too, like blowing up balloons in Mario Kart DS.

Comparing the mic to the dual screens and the touchscreen is a little short sighted though. Most developers either don't bother with the mic at all or tack on something as a novelty that ultimately doesn't affect the gameplay in any significant manner.
