NAMFox 1.1 Beta 1 Released!

Note: This beta release is no longer available. You may download the final version here.

Tonight marks the culmination of months of work on the rewrite and further improvement of NAMFox. In this effort I've managed to fix an extremely high percentage of bugs that were reported as well as add numerous new features that are long overdue.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the newest updates to NAMFox, including this release, will no longer support Firefox 2. I have tried to resolve problems I have had in this version of Firefox, even by communicating with the developers responsible for some of the changes between Firefox 2 and 3, but there are just too many significant changes between the two versions to account for reliably. I know there are a few of you who cannot upgrade to Firefox 3, and I apologize for that.

This is a beta version, which means it is an optional update. If you want this version, you will need to download it from the link on this page. Since it is a beta version, I would very much appreciate any feedback you have, positive or negative. Bug reports and suggestions for new features are always welcome. You may post these in either the main NAMFox forum, or the NAMFox for Moderators forum if the bug/suggestion relates to moderator functionality.

The following is a list of changes between NAMFox 1.0.5 and NAMFox 1.1b1. A more thorough list (though targeted more for technical customers) is available here.

New Features

  1. Interface and Speed Improvements for Quick Reply and Quick Edit
  2. Reliability Improvements for Quick Edit and Quick Quote
  3. Increase Number of Custom Messages to 25
  4. Make NAMFox Toolbar Customizable
  5. Strip Colors From Posts
  6. Choose What Smileys Appear in NAMFox Toolbar
  7. Custom Smiley Should Appear in NAMFox Toolbar
  8. More Links in NAMFox Toolbar
  9. Put Default Message in Blog Posts and Comments
  10. Search for Books in NAMFox Toolbar
  11. Link Name Markup Button Should Act Like Neoseeker's
  12. Support for new Skully8 Smiley in Quick Edit and NAMFox Toolbar
  13. Support for new PlayStation Smileys in Quick Edit and NAMFox Toolbar
  14. Support New Wiki Tags in Quick Edit and AutoComplete
  15. Rearrange Quick Edit Buttons

Bugs That Were Fixed

  1. Quick Edit Fails With Multiple Different Types of Quotes
  2. Quick Edit Fails With Multiple Successive Heading nTags
  3. No Obvious Way to Close Preference Dialog on Mac OSX
  4. Quick Reply Says I'm a Guest
  5. Quick Reply Conflicts with Neoseeker Quick Reply
  6. Quick Edit Fails to Translate Multiple Spoiler Tags Correctly

And I'm spent. 280 hours of work since December 18. A lot of that work happened behind the scenes, improving the infrastructure and maintainability of the product, as well as introducing an automated means to test that various features are actually working. I'm very happy with this release and hope you all are, too.

Special thanks goes to lord monkey for helping find bugs in the pre-beta builds, as well as Quierta for providing feedback on the new look for Quick Reply and Quick Edit.

Cheers,
Artificer

Since December 18? Thanks for waiting until my Neo-birthday to start working. You are so thoughtful!

I'll give it a go. Thanks Art!

From what I've encountered so far there's two things of interest.

One is not having all those links across the top of my browser which looks much neater.

The other is the new way of using quick edit which I found to be really cool.

I'm not sure if it's my computer or not, but there have been a few problems so far:

    1. The smiley's list refuses to drop down on the NAMfox toolbar. The only thing that pops up is a small white square.
    2. In some threads, the quick reply doesn't appear while in others it does.

Besides those, I'm loving the new NAMfox.

      1. Did you check to see which smileys are enabled in the preferences window?
      2. Quick Reply doesn't appear in threads that are closed and threads you don't have permission to reply to. Does that mirror what you're seeing?

        1. Yes, but I'd forgotten to enable them, so it's all good in that section.
        2. It appeared in some General Discussions I tend to post in, while some Pokemon Diamond Clans are also not revealing the quick reply box. Some threads do show the box, but others don't.

    Great work Art.

However, I am having a few problems. First of all, the quick edit box isn't appearing for me. I have checked, and the threads I'm testing it in are indeed open.

Secondly, I can't seem to figure out how to use the strip color option. All I see is three options in the toolbar; smileys, messages, and NAMFox; none of them seem to have the option I'm looking for.

Check out the NAMFox Preferences option in the Tools menu. The option is under the Miscellaneous section.

I made a bug report in the forum.

I know why it doesn't work now. If you have no smilies selected in the prefs the little box comes up.

      It's no bug.

      EDIT: Report deleted.

I'm loving the customisation options Art.

Mush less clutter at the top of my screen.

Hybrid Harpuia and Aspect of Bane, if you could post links to the threads where you think you should find Quick Reply here, then I'd really appreciate it.

Like Kamikaze, I am loving the ability to get rid of that toolbar and just move those buttons to the menu bar instead. Thanks so much!

I can't download by the link provided as it just leads me to a dead page and no option for downloading. Right click and saving doesn't help either.

I also can't seem to find Namfox on Mozilla either.

Does a little message pop up under your tabs saying "Firefox prevented this site (blogs.neoseeker.com) from asking you to install software on this computer."? If so click the "Allow" button there in order to download it.

And yeah, NAMFox isn't on http://addons.mozilla.org, yet.

How many times have you tried? I'm talking to Xenctuary about it now since he runs the server.

Do you think you might be able to talk with the guys at Mozilla to get this sorted out if you can't find this Andrew H.?

That's how I found that extension in the first place. My contact sent Andrew an email but I don't think he's going to respond. They can't, due to their privacy policy, just take the extension down or make me an owner of the extension without consulting the original owner.

No worries, though, I'm already scheming something to get around this.

Loving it Art. The toolbar's much neater which is awesome and the Quick Reply and Quick Edit are being buggy for me at all anymore. Nice work.

I noticed that the quick reply was changed around a bit in this beta. It is now below the "Jump to forum:" drop-down, it has a blue background, text NAMFox Quick Reply, and a link to the forum rules or whatever. Why were these things added? It makes you have to scroll down a ton to use quick reply.

Ok guys, just some quick info. The server is fine, the issue came into play when the DNS was directing to a domain I no longer own. Jeevan created a new direction, and I have updated all of the domains that I own with the new DNS information. Problem is, I can access it, so can a few other people but many cannot. The DNS can take up to 24 hours to settle. I have the file on my comp at work and can send a copy to people via email or on MSN until the DNS is fully operational. Please feel free to contact me with your info if you would like me to send it to you.

    Cheers

Angyles was able to send this over to me on MSN, and so I uploaded it to MegaUpload to make things easier on her.
