Hey guys. I was originally going to write about Shirt.Woot but I'll save that for another occasion. Forgive the lack of attention to detail........I tend to write these posts in one sitting.
Heroes of Newerth is a new RTS made in the vein of such games as DotA (the immensely popular Warcraft 3 mod), developed by S2 Games, the guys behind series such as
Savage. A lot of the game has been taken directly from DotA, such as the items and a number of heroes. However, all of this has been done with Icefrog's (the developer of DotA) blessing, and the game in beta form certainly looks exciting.
The first thing you'll notice are the visuals. They are immaculate. All the animations are super clean and crisp, and it just looks so much better than the now dated WC3 look. Some elements of the game have been revamped, such as the shops, which are now sorted by type (attack-minded weapons together, defensive ones together etc.) and are far more logically sorted. You can also make recipe'd items far easier, as a pane shows with the recipes the item you are hovered over is part of.
Apart from that, it plays pretty similar to DotA. There are a number of maps available, but of course the most popular one is the port of DotA's Forest map.
Other things have been improved greatly, such as the whole networking aspect of the game.
Anyways, I recommend you check it out when you get the chance, as a lot of work's been done to take all the bad parts of DotA and improve them dramatically.
I happen to have some beta invites at my disposal, so the first people to PM me with a valid email address will get one sent to their inbox. :)
Next post coming whenever I can be bothered and uni is not getting in the way. Peace.
And to think I laughed at you
For how you saw the world, with all that empty space inside your heart
I have to cling to things now, doubles and cigarettes
Forever trying to find you on the lips, of someone else
Anyway I'm hoping they'll make it a bit more noob-friendly and make it a bit more diverse in that there won't be a certain item pack for every hero and you have a better chance of learning the game without getting owned until you have mastered that "same-routine" gamestyle.
As for the licensing, since DotA wasn't Blizzard's work, they don't have any claim over it. Remember, everything's been changed with different names and models, so none of it directly rips off anything Blizzard have made within WC3.
