Scribblenauts @ Neoseeker [Scribble@Neo]

This is Scribble@Neo, Scribblenauts @ Neoseeker, the latest in the @Neoseeker campaign, promoting Warner Bros.'s DS puzzle title Scribblenauts. Scribblenauts is the emergent puzzle action game from the folks over at 5TH Cell, headed and co-founded by Managing Director Joseph M. Tringali, Creative Director Jeremiah Slaczka, and Business Director Brett Caird. The studio's body of work includes well-received DS platformer Drawn to Life and DS tower defense Lock's Quest.

The company's latest project is Scribblenauts, the media darling of the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, and winner of many Best of Show awards, toppling favorites such as Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2.

Scribblenauts boasts a 22,000+ word in-game dictionary in its tiny cartridge, where you can write or type in any object that you can think of (that's not a proper noun, copyrighted or inappropriate), and it will be replicated in-game, with the qualities of the real life object. This is possible because Objectnaut, 5TH Cell's main game engine in which each object is given a set of properties based on the object's characteristics. For the programmers out there, the general idea of the system is akin to implementing interfaces in Java.

Of course, aside from the various ordinary everyday objects, there are some items in the game that are pretty out there, that you wouldn't expect:

One now-famous forum post concerning Scribblenauts that launched the media and internet love for the game is Post 217 by Feep on the NeoGAF forums (all of which are in the game, by the way). Here is the post that turned Scribblenauts from sleeper hit to internet darling in all its (censored because of Neoseeker) glory:

quote Feep, Post #217, NeoGAF
I had played all the big titles at E3. Private showings of God of War III, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake. But at 4:00 on Thursday, I was wandering around the show floor, wondering what else I had to see. I saw a small little booth for "Scribblenauts!" in the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment section. I mean, who goes to that booth? But I remember hearing about it on GAF, and so I decided to check it out.

Best game of E3? Without a *bleep*ing doubt. Anyone who says otherwise did not play Scribblenauts. Best game of all time? Jesus Christ, I don't know, maybe. It's a game that challenges your IMAGINATION. No other game has ever done that.

So listen to this story. I was in the early levels; I didn't quite have an idea of how ridiculously in-depth the database was. I was summoning things like ladders, glasses of water, rayguns, what have you. But I reached a level with zombie robots, and the zombie robots kept killing me. Rayguns didn't work, a torch didn't work, a pickaxe didn't work. In my frustration, I wrote in "Time Machine". And one popped up. What the *bleep*? A smile dawned on my face. I hopped in, and the option was given to me to either travel to the past or the future. I chose past. When I hopped out, there were *bleep*ing dinosaurs walking around. I clicked one, and realized I could RIDE THEM. So I hopped on a *bleep*ing DINOSAUR, traveled back to the present, and stomped the s--- out of robot zombies. Did you just read that sentence? Did you really? I *BLEEP*ING TRAVELED THROUGH TIME AND JUMPED ON A DINOSAUR AND USED IT TO KILL MOTHER*BLEEP*ING ROBOT ZOMBIES. This game is unbelievable. Impossible. There's nothing you can't do.

Holy *bleep*ing s---.
Oh, and by the way, are you not a fan of American English? The North American version will support Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, French, Spanish, and other variants. For those in the United Kingdom, your version of the game will account for British English.

Of course, the game isn't all about spawning random items to test the game's word database. You control the titular Scribblenaut, Maxwell, with one goal in mind: collect the Starite in each level armed with a pen and paper. There are over 200 levels in Scribblenauts, split between Puzzle stages and Action stages.

In Puzzle stages, you have to solve the puzzle presented in the level in order for the Starite to appear. In Action stages, you can see the Starite, but you'll need write up some items and platform your way to the goal. If you complete a level meeting certain requirements, you will gain "Merits", which are in-game achievements for each level. You can replay any level at any time, but the game will remember up to three playthroughs which items you have used. In a replay, you can't use an item that you have used before in that level up to those three previous playthroughs. Aside from merits, you earn "Ollars" with each completed level, which is an in-game currency that allows you to customize Maxwell.

With this sort of near-infinite replayability, Scribblenauts is a game that challenges your imagination. Any Joe Schmoe can take an axe to a tree to get the Starite down, but can you think of a better way to do it?
